Behind the glass of the birthing room, the vets were rushing around, and he sat on a plastic chair listening to the rain starting again outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By dawn a squeak sounded \u2014 the dog had given birth. Their cry did not sound like a puppy squeak \u2014 more like a quiet, hoarse howl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 These are not purebred dogs, \u2014 the vet said, squatting next to one of the babies. \u2014 Most likely the father\u2026 is a wolf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 A wolf?..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Yes. Judging by the marks on the mother\u2019s body, she may have lived in the forest. It happens \u2014 a wild wolf mates with a dog, and hybrids are born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dog tiredly lifted her head and licked one of the babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 They are still her children, \u2014 the man said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week later he took the shepherd home with him. The puppies remained at the center \u2014 under the supervision of scientists. One of the vets said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 These babies are a rarity. Smart, strong and loyal.
